Residents are invited to join one of Adelaide’s largest tree planting events

Greening Australia, the City of West Torrens and the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board are calling on residents to get their hands dirty to help their local environment at a community tree planting event on Sunday 18th of June.

The annual Arbor Day event will result in 4,500 native seedlings being planted to restore habitat along the River Torrens at Lockleys.

The event forms part of Greening Australia’s collaborative Adelaide Green Cities programme which is working to make Adelaide a greener, more liveable city.

City of West Torrens’ Environment Officer Amy Bruckman says Arbor Day is a perfect opportunity for families to become involved in urban environmental restoration.

“It’s such a wonderful way to volunteer and to make a positive difference to the environment in a few short hours,” she says.

Greening Australia’s Adelaide Director of Conservation, Stuart Collard, says “Arbor Day aims to encourage community involvement and appreciation of the value of trees and nature in our city”.

“Previous Arbor Day plantings along the River Torrens have transformed once degraded areas into wonderful spaces for both people and nature to thrive within urban Adelaide,” he says.

“Arbor Day provides the community with a chance to make a significant contribution to the ongoing restoration of habitat along the River Torrens. Being held in June, it is also perfect weather for jumping and playing in muddy puddles!” he says.

The event will take place along the River Torrens, on Michael Street at Lockleys and will run from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

This year’s event will also include free environmental workshops run by Natural Resources, Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges staff, family activities for young children and a free BBQ for volunteers at noon.
