IGA’s independent supermarkets are at the heart of many towns around the country. They are as passionate about supporting local communities as we are at Greening Australia. They partnered with us on a national ‘Buy One Get One Tree’ promotion to plant native trees where they are needed most.

The promotion gave everyday shoppers the opportunity to contribute directly to rebuilding nature by purchasing participating products. For every participating product sold, Greening Australia would plant a native tree to support biodiversity, sequester carbon and build habitat for local wildlife.

The promotion ran in 2023 and again in 2024, raising funds for Greening Australia to plant a total 105,000 trees.

65,000 of the trees were planted in 2024, helping to expand selected project sites in priority regions in southeast Queensland, western Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. A further 40,000 trees are being planted in 2025.

These trees are being established in collaboration with landholders and community volunteers across the country, meaning each IGA planting is part of a landscape-scale effort to restore ecosystems.

These plants will continue to grow, bringing much needed habitat to support wildlife, build biodiversity and improve water quality.

Reflections on the partnership

“At IGA, we’re proud to have partnered with Greening Australia in a shared commitment to support our local communities and environment. With the help of our shoppers, we’ve been able to contribute to the restoration of native habitats and the planting of thousands of trees—an effort that reflects our mutual belief in helping communities thrive.”

“Quite a few of Greening Australia’s team members live and work in regional towns, and we do most of our restoration work with landholders out in rural areas. So we really connected with IGA on their values of supporting regional communities. It felt really meaningful, as well, that anyone around the country could show their support for rebuilding nature with their everyday shop and contribute directly to our planting projects. It’s an excellent example of a partnership that meets people where they’re at and helps them support nature at both a national and local scale.”
