In memory of Rita Tingey

It is with sadness that we recognise the recent passing of a great contributor to the Greening Australia family in the Northern Territory, but it is also with great respect and esteem that we acknowledge the work she was involved in during her 12 and a half years with Greening Australia and the lasting effect she has had on staff and volunteers in that time.

Rita Tingey began her work with the Aboriginal Landcare Education Program (ALEP) team in 1996. Her enthusiasm, dedication and cross cultural skills were integral in the success of the program and she was an active major contributor in developing the successful Learning Guides in support of the program.

During her time with Greening Australia Rita also spent a lot of time working at the Nursery. Her intimate knowledge of the Top End’s native plants, their uses, and their propagation have really added value to Greening Australia over the years. Rita loved imparting her knowledge of NT bush tucker with peers.

When Rita left Greening Australia in October 2008, the then Chief Executive of Greening Australia Ltd, David Williams, said of Rita “You have been a vital and highly valued ALEP team member and part of the heart and soul of Greening Australia in the NT for many years. The respect you have throughout the Aboriginal community has been crucial to the success of ALEP’s work over the years”.

It is with wholehearted admiration that we remember Rita’s efforts, friendship, and love of the Territory, and we wish her family and friends our sincere condolences.
