In suburbs like Liverpool, Merrylands and Granville, many schoolyards bake in the heat — with asphalt surfaces reaching above 80°C on hot days and almost no shade to speak of. Through our Cooling the Schools program, we’re planting thousands of native trees in schoolgrounds across Western Sydney, bringing back canopy cover that cools playgrounds, supports local wildlife, and makes outdoor spaces usable again for the students who need them most.

Once a thriving reef catchment, Palm Creek’s wetlands were overtaken by invasive weeds and degraded land use — leaving waterways choked and wildlife gone. Working alongside Nywaigi Traditional Owners and local landholders, we’re removing aquatic weeds, restoring native vegetation, and rebuilding natural water flow so that cleaner water reaches the Great Barrier Reef and life returns to landscapes that were effectively silent.

The 2019–20 bushfires tore through Kangaroo Island, stripping away the sheoak woodland that Glossy Black-Cockatoos depend on for food and shelter. In some areas, the land was left bare almost overnight. We’re working with local landholders to replant sheoak woodland, protect regenerating patches, and reconnect fragmented habitat – giving one of Australia’s most vulnerable birds a real chance to recover.

Less than 1% of Victoria’s original Western Plains grasslands survive intact — the rest cleared for agriculture, leaving ecosystems fragmented and struggling to function. We’re partnering with landholders across the Victorian Volcanic Plains to re-establish native grasses, wildflowers and vegetation at landscape scale, using locally-suited species selected for the conditions these landscapes will face in the future. Slowly, isolated patches are reconnecting — and the land is beginning to work again.
