Program Officer, Cooling the Schools

About you

This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with our Senior Program Officer and play a leading and driving role in the on-ground delivery of our Cooling the Schools project.

Your practical skills, frontline leadership, accountability and autonomy position you to be successful in this role.

The role is for a fixed term, 12 month contract. It is a full time (37.5) hours per week, and you will be reporting to the Senior Program officer and Operations Lead.

Function and Scope

The position supports Greening Australia’s environmental and engagement activities through implementing school and community revegetation and restoration projects. The position is accountable for technical support of Greening Australia’s projects. The Program Officer works within a team environment to deliver on the strategic objectives of Greening Australia. The position requires a level of physical fitness and an ability to work unsupervised. Primarily an outdoors position which involves physical activities and the operation of equipment in a range of outdoor locations in a variety of weather conditions. The nature of the organisation’s activities requires flexible working arrangements and some evening and weekend work. It also requires travelling to and from sites on a daily basis in work vehicles.

Key Position Accountabilities

Key areas of accountability and outcomes include:

  1. Provides visible leadership for onground.
  2. Assist with the scoping and delivery of the Cooling the Schools project, including:
    • delivery of school incursions including curriculum-based lessons
    • liaison with principals, teachers and school staff to facilitate incursions
    • coordination of contractors and materials to support on ground delivery
    • site assessments and preparation of individual site plans for schools
    • field visits, site assessments, landowner agreements for public open space projects
    • coordination of implementation of on ground works and maintenance
    • project/technical research
    • monitoring and reporting (including ecological monitoring and assessment)
    • data input and mapping
  3. Maintain project reporting requirements as directed by the Operations Manager and/or Senior Program staff.
  4. Contribute to the scoping and set up and design of larger projects.
  5. Participate in accurately collecting and recording project activities using appropriate technology, including works undertaken, locations, and quantities, and provide regular reporting of project progress.
  6. Contribute to Greening Australia’s strategic planning processes as required.
  7. Contribute to organisational media and communications tasks, including workshops and presentations.
  8. Assist in organisation of work activities for self and team including organisation of project resources in accordance with Delegation of Authority.
  9. Give clear instructions, which incorporate aspects of health and safety and ensure that they are obeyed.
  10. See that you and persons under your charge, receive and use appropriate processes and personal protective equipment and other safety equipment.
  11. Ensure facilities, assets and equipment are well maintained and fit for purpose.

Key Selection Criteria


  1. 2-5 years’ relevant work experience.
  2. Current full manual driver’s licence.
  3. Competence in trailer towing and operation of small power tools and equipment such as brush cutters and petrol-earth augers.
  4. Demonstrated ability to present to school aged children and/or community groups
  5. Working with Children Check (WWCC).
  6. Qualifications and experience in chemical handling (ChemCert, Certificate of Competency), or ability to obtain a ChemCert.
  7. Demonstrated ability to lead teams and coordinate works.
  8. Demonstrated understanding of the technical aspects of the role.
