Rockhampton to Reef – caring for the Fitzroy River
The mighty Fitzroy River provides the lifeblood of central Queensland as it flows to the waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
Greening Australia is working with government agencies, local business, industry and community groups to restore and protect the natural values of this important river system. Work is currently focused on three projects: the Rockhampton Urban Waterways Initiative, the Rockhampton Riverbank Development and the Fitzroy River Turtle Conservation Project. These projects engage and educate the local community and inspire involvement in on-ground restoration works. These conservation initiatives improve river health, which ultimately improves the quality of water entering the Great Barrier Reef system.
Project Achievements
- Enhance and restore the health of Rockhampton’s waterways thereby improving the water quality that flows to the Great Barrier Reef.
- Implement conservation management strategies for the vulnerable Fitzroy River Turtle.
- Provide new riverside recreation and leisure facilities, whilst improving and managing the natural aspects and habitats of the riverbank.
- Engage and educate the local community in river health issues and provide traineeship opportunities for local people.
