This project was initiated in 2007 where an opportunity was identified to address a degraded riparian community on public land along the Middle Yarra currently managed by Parks Victoria. Adjacent to the site is Odyssey House, a 70 bed residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. Greening Australia approached Odyssey House to propose a partnership where Odyssey residents could participate in restoring and maintaining the river bank by constructing rabbit proof fences and growing and planting indigenous plants, with Greening Australia supervision and guidance.
Most Tuesday mornings, a group of volunteers work alongside Greening Australia project officer, Anne Fitzpatrick helping to maintain and improve the river side.
Funding has been derived through a number of grants - a Community Water Grant (2008), Melbourne Water “Corridors of Green” (2007, 2009, and 2010, 2011and 2012) and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation (2011).
Project Achievements
- 1 kilometre of rabbit proof fencing erected
- 20 000 indigenous tubestock planted
- over 1000 volunteer hours of participation in fencing, planting and maintaining site
