Murrayfield: a model enterprise
‘Murrayfield’ is a 4097 hectare sheep farm on Tasmania’s Bruny Island that supports significant natural and cultural values. In partnership with the Indigenous Land Corporation, Greening Australia is using Murrayfield to demonstrate how natural and cultural values can be maintained on a commercially viable farm.
The project is sponsored by National Landcare Program and Greening Australia is running an accredited training program in Conservation and Land Management as part of the works program. Four young Aboriginal people are undertaking this course and will receive training in agriculture, land management, cultural heritage management and infrastructure maintenance. Murrayfield is home to several threatened native plants and animals.
Two endangered plant communities occur on the property, which supports about 2000 hectares of remnant native vegetation. Nearly 1600 artifacts have been discovered from 283 locations within the property and an estimated 1.5 million artifacts may remain beneath the site.
Project Achievements
- Fencing of remnant native vegetation and artifact sites.
- Land rehabilitation works including revegetation, salinity management and weed control.
- Accredited training underway for four young Aboriginal people.
- Field days to engage and inform the broader community.
