Greening Australia and Shell (Australia)

Shell Australia is working with Greening Australia to involve communities and their staff in the management of local environments in a variety of ways.

In Western Australia Shell has been partnering with Greening Australia on the Reconnections project since 2004. Reconnections focuses on the revegetation of the Nowanup property, a key piece of land forming part of the visionary Gondwana Link program. You can learn more about Reconnections here.

As part of Reconnections Shell employees are committing the time of themselves and their families to undertake the revegetation activities and meet and work with the local Noongar people. In June 2007, the 'meeting place' built by the Noongar people on the Nowanup property was opened thanks to the financial support of Shell.

In Victoria, Shell and Greening Australia have been running the Limeburners Link project since 2006 with the support of the City of Greater Geelong. This project is again restoring a natural environment, but this time with a solid focus on training and building the capacity of the local community to best manage the wetland landscape. Limeburners Lagoon is the focal point.  The lagoon is a significant environmental site that is facing pressures such as the presence of weeds that are literally choking the life out of the Lagoon and it's surrounding grassland landscape.

Both Shell and Greening Australia are committed to building community capacity as well as achieving sound environmental outcomes through this initiative.

Project Achievements

  • 600 ha of native vegetation established on previously-cleared farm land in Westyern Australia - approximately 50% has been on Greening Australia’s Nowanup property, a key landscape linkage between the Stirling Range and the Fitzgerald River National Park, and part of the Gondwana Link pathway.
  • Noongar Meeting Place established on Greening Australia’s Nowanup Property in the South Coast region of Western Australia.
  • Real environmental restoration of the local environment at Limeburners Lagoon near Geelong in Victoria.
  • Increasing community awareness of and value in Limeburners Lagoon.
