WOMADelaide offsets carbon emissions

The renowned Adelaide world music festival, WOMADelaide, has enlisted the help of Greening Australia to promote a ‘green and global’ message to its 75 000 festival goers.

Greening Australia is putting the message into practice with an ambitious tree planting program that seeks to offset the festival’s carbon emissions.

The trees are planted at high priority sites in South Australia affected by salinity or other threats to increase the benefits of the plantings beyond carbon offsetting.  The trees will also provide habitat for native plants and animals including some threatened species.

Greening Australia and WOMADelaide will partner in this progressive program until at least 2010.  Plantings for this project are compliant with the Kyoto protocol and are registered on land titles ensuring the carbon offset benefit is permanently secure.

Project Achievements

  • 75 000 festival goers are exposed to WOMADelaide’s ‘Green and Global’ message and the great work carried out by Greening Australia in the State.
  • Tree plantings offset the Festival’s carbon emissions and reduce its ecological footprint.
  • Additional biodiversity benefits gained from the tree planting program include addressing salinity and providing habitat for native wildlife, including threatened species.
