Biodiversity - the focus of all our work

Biodiversity, the variety of all living microbes, plants and animals that interact with each other to form ecosystems such as wetlands, grasslands, forests and deserts, is at the heart of Greening Australia's work.

All Greening Australia projects aim to achieve tangible biodiversity improvements through protecting, enhancing and restoring native vegetation in any given landscape.

Greening Australia believes native vegetation is an excellent catalyst for restoring the balance in a degraded ecosystem. Our projects focus on helping people to manage existing native vegetation and conserve wildlife living within it, and use native trees and plants to improve habitat, soil and water quality in areas where native vegetation has been removed or is depleted. Much of our work supports and encourages sustainable farming enterprises, recognising that maintaining and improving biodiversity on productive farming land is as important as in wilderness areas.

Australia has a rich diversity of native plants that are uniquely adapted to our ancient soils and highly variable climate. This native vegetation is a key part of our natural infrastructure, and should be as important to the Australian community as roads, schools and hospitals.
