Alcoa Revegetation Assistance Scheme
Greening Australia manages and operates this scheme to allow ready access for land managers to a range of specialised revegetation equipment, machinery and technical advice. This program is generously supported by Alcoa World Alumina Australia.
The equipment and machinery for loan includes:
- Manual planting tools and equipment eg. Pottiputkis, Hamilton Tree Planters, Hiko double hip brackets and belts etc.
- Mechanical planting and direct seeding machines which includes:
- Hamilton "Arborline" Tree Seeders suitable for loams and sandy conditions
- Rodden III Seeders for a range of locations and terrain; especially lighter soils
- Rippa Seeder suitable for a range of soils in semi-arid areas and rougher terrain
- Saltbush Mounding Direct Seeders
- Eco Tree Seeder suitable for loams and sands
- Waikerie Planter developed for a range of cell potting systems including Lannen and Hyco pots
- 'Bushplanter' Vegie Planter used for a variety of potting systems
- Youmans Tree Planter used for planting a variety of stock including bare rooted plants
In planning the implementation of broad-scale vegetation projects we stress the importance of undertaking thorough planning, site preparation and continuing management.
Important considerations are:
- collection of adequate quantities of seed of the correct species and provenence
- adequate site preparation which may involve the addition of soil conditioners and a period of weed control
- selection of appropriate machinery and time of planting or seeding
- ongoing monitoring of weeds, insects and vermin to assure survival of seeds and seedlings
A number of innovations are being introduced to improve the success of direct seeding, including pre-treatment of seeds and the application of surface conditioners to prevent the loss of seed to insects.
