Ten ways to volunteer with Greening Australia in the Capital Region
1. Participate in community planting events. Greening Australia is partnering with the ACT Government to recover the bushfire-affected landscapes west of Canberra, in particular the Lower Cotter Catchment. Since 2004, community volunteers have planted over 135,000 native trees and shrubs. And there is still much work to be done. Planting events are normally held on the first Sunday of each month between April and September. For larger events Greening Australia organises bus transport to and from the site. Details of event transport will be included with any event notification.
2. Participate in community propagation events, where volunteers place seed in forestry tubes, an easy and pleasant task suitable for the whole family. Propagation events normally occur between October and December.
3. Get some work colleagues together and pledge to plant 1000 native plants in the Lower Cotter. Greening Australia can organise a corporate planting event for 30 to 500 people, and is a great way to get out and get active, do something real for the environment, and build up staff morale, motivation and initiative.
4. Help out in the GA nursery in Aranda with tasks such as propagating plants and thinning seedlings. Our nursery volunteers meet each Wednesday during school term from 9:00am to 12:00noon. A delicious morning tea is provided.
5. Join the Green Team, which meets at Aranda every Thursday to head out on a minibus to a different site each week. The Green Team undertakes varied tasks such as planting trees and shrubs, collecting and cleaning seeds, hand seeding and site preparation and maintenance.
6. Join the Adopt-A-Patch program, where small teams of volunteers enhance and maintain sites by planting tubestock, hand seeding, removing weeds and replanting where necessary. Adopt-A-Patch activities normally occur on weekdays.
7. Join the Cotter Crew, a team of volunteers dedicated to enhancing the Lower Cotter Catchment by planting tubestock, collecting provenance seed, hand seeding old forestry roads, and preparing sites for planting by making up and placing tree guards. The Cotter Crew normally meets on weekdays.
8. Join the Seed Squad, a team of volunteers that helps GA staff collect provenance seed, clean and store seed in GA’s seed banks, and establish and maintain Seed Production Areas around the Capital Region, and hand seed old forestry roads and other areas in the Lower Cotter Catchment. Seed Squad activities normally occur on weekdays.
9. Monitor the growth and survival rates of both tubestock and direct seeded plantings around the ACT.
10. Help out in the Aranda office with marketing and administration tasks.
